Over two decades in the woods taught me forests are our best climate allies. Now translating that experience into actionable climate-smart forestry. Focused on where timber meets carbon, and where research meets reality.
Well my writing doesn't have to be perfect it just has to start. I think there is an opportunity as I go through 2025 and beyond to share stories and connect. If I want to be an expert on climate-smart forestry I need to start putting my ideas and thoughts into the world. I'm going to be working on some interesting projects that I think I will have the opportunity to share more on. If I can keep up with everything I have to do to maintain my professions, my dad responsibilities and everything else life throws at me.
What is CFS? Europeans have been defining and doing it for years. Take traditional approaches to forest management with modern objectives with a focus on climate and resilience. I think about it in simple terms that we need to maximize the net sequestration in our working forests and think about resilience and adaptation first and foremost.

For me in my practice it is a lot about thinking about water. How we don't have enough of it in the summer and too much of it in the winter. That intensification of the hydrological cycle will have profound impacts on the forests and the communities in which we operate. Not all areas will be impacted the same. When it comes to climate risk we need to be thinking about our vulnerabilities and how we manage risks with such great uncertainty. We live in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times. There needs to be some difficult conversations and foresters are on the front lines to these changes. If only we had to deal with the complexities of the natural environment. People are involved and forestry is multi-disciplinary and public interests is evolving.
As I continue to practice we see what we are trained to observe. These are complex natural systems and complex systems in which we operate. My thinking is that writing about some of these important topics helps me communicate, advocate and build my competencies. I don't know a lot and I have a lot to learn. This was not written with AI and full of grammatical errors. I think I will be writing more with AI no doubt but another topic for another day.
