Leveraging AI to advance adaptation and mitigation strategies in working forests
Forests represent one of our most powerful allies in addressing climate change—both through mitigation (carbon sequestration) and adaptation (building resilience in our ecosystems). Drawing from my experience leading climate initiatives and building extensive monitoring networks, I'm passionate about combining AI technologies with forestry expertise to accelerate our progress toward climate-smart forestry practices.
"The forests are borrowed from my children, and it is a great challenge for us all to reduce our emissions and ensure a resilient forest that can sustain the climate our future foresters will be living in."
As the recipient of the Forest Professionals BC's 2023 Climate Change Innovator Award, I've dedicated my career to developing practical solutions that help working forests maximize their climate potential while remaining economically viable. Now, I'm focused on how AI can transform our ability to measure, monitor, and manage forests for optimal climate outcomes.
AI systems can now process complex satellite and LiDAR data to provide much more accurate carbon stock assessments across large forest landscapes. These tools allow us to move beyond traditional inventory methods to track carbon in real-time and model future scenarios under different management regimes.
The true value of forests extends far beyond timber—they provide clean water, biodiversity habitat, and carbon sequestration. AI helps quantify these ecosystem services, enabling more holistic management decisions and creating new revenue streams for forest owners through carbon markets and other mechanisms.
Climate change is already affecting forest health and productivity. By analyzing vast datasets from weather stations, soil sensors, and tree monitoring systems, AI can help predict how different forest types will respond to changing conditions and identify the most resilient management practices.
The forests we plant today will grow in a different climate than we've experienced historically. AI can analyze complex climate models alongside site-specific data to recommend the best species and genetic varieties for long-term forest health and carbon sequestration.
I led the groundwork for Mosaic's BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative, a program that enables companies to achieve their carbon footprint goals more rapidly by investing in improved forest management. This initiative represents the intersection of forest economics, climate science, and practical forestry—a perfect application area for AI tools that can:

Receiving the Forest Professionals BC's Climate Change Innovator Award
In 2023, I was honored to receive the Forest Professionals BC's Climate Change Innovator Award, recognizing contributions to climate-smart forestry practices. This award highlights the importance of practical innovation in forestry that addresses the twin challenges of mitigation and adaptation.
Key recognized achievements include:
The award reflects a commitment to ensuring forests play their crucial role in addressing climate change while continuing to provide sustainable timber and other ecosystem services.
Read more about the awardThere's a tremendous opportunity to use AI to amplify the stories and case studies that demonstrate the value of natural assets. Working forests are often overlooked in climate discussions, yet they represent some of our most powerful climate solutions when managed properly.
AI systems can integrate diverse forest data—from LiDAR and satellite imagery to ground-level measurements and historical records—creating a comprehensive picture of forest carbon dynamics that would be impossible to assemble manually.
By processing thousands of variables, AI can model how different forest management approaches will affect carbon sequestration, biodiversity, water quality, and timber production—helping foresters make optimal decisions for multiple values.
One of AI's most powerful applications is in translating complex forest data into compelling visuals and narratives that clearly communicate the climate benefits of working forests to stakeholders, investors, and the public.
For carbon markets to function effectively, we need cost-effective, reliable methods to verify carbon benefits. AI dramatically reduces the cost and improves the accuracy of monitoring forest carbon stocks at scale.
Climate-smart forestry isn't just a theoretical concept—it's a practical approach that can benefit various stakeholders in the forestry sector. Here are some specific ways I can help you implement these principles:
Whether you're managing forest lands, developing carbon projects, or looking to integrate climate considerations into your forestry operations, I can help you leverage AI to improve outcomes for both climate and business.
